Atishi Set to Become Delhi’s New Chief Minister as Arvind Kejriwal Steps Down
Delhi’s New Chief Minister: Delhi minister Atishi is poised to become the new Chief Minister after Arvind Kejriwal decides to resign. The change was announced following Kejriwal’s meeting with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena today. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lawmakers unanimously backed the move during a party meeting.
At the gathering, AAP leader Dilip Pandey asked Kejriwal to pick the next Chief Minister. When Atishi’s name was put forward, it got wholehearted support from everyone present. She was then chosen as the new head of the legislature party.
The 43-year-old Kalkaji MLA became a minister after Manish Sisodia’s arrest in the controversial liquor policy case. As Kejriwal and Sisodia faced legal troubles, Atishi took on a more visible role, speaking for the party at press events.
Speaking to AAP workers on Sunday, Kejriwal said, “I’ll step down as Chief Minister in two days. I won’t return until people have had their say.” He added that he’d only take the job again if the public wanted him to.
Kejriwal decided to resign after the Supreme Court let him out on bail. He had been jailed over the scrapped liquor policy. With elections likely in February, Kejriwal and Sisodia have promised to get public approval before taking up any official roles again.
